MDG vs Affirm: cash in your bank or financing at the till

These two solve different problems. One pays a retailer for something you are buying right now; the other puts money in your checking account for something that cannot wait.

The short answer

If you are standing at a partner retailer's checkout and a 0% plan is on offer, take it; nothing we sell beats free. If you need money in your bank account, or you are paying a mechanic, a dentist or a landlord rather than a merchant with a BNPL integration, that is what MDG is for.

What Affirm is

A buy-now-pay-later provider integrated into the checkout of partner retailers. You choose it when paying for a specific purchase, and Affirm pays the merchant. Some merchants subsidise 0% promotional plans; others carry interest.

It is credit tied to a transaction, not a source of cash.

What MDG is

A direct lender. We deposit $200 to $5,000 into your own checking account for any purpose, or finance merchandise from our own catalog. Our APR runs from 18.00% to 35.95%, with no origination fee and no prepayment penalty.

Approval is based on income and affordability as much as on your score.

MDG vs Affirm, side by side

Structural differences first, because those do not change month to month. Figures second, because those do.

Where each one wins

We would rather tell you when the other option is better than have you find out after signing.

Choose Affirm when

  • You are buying from a retailer that offers a 0% promotional plan. Free money beats any interest rate, including ours.
  • The purchase is planned and you are already at that retailer's checkout.
  • You want to split a purchase over a few weeks rather than borrow for months.
  • You do not need the money as cash.

Choose MDG when

  • You need cash in your bank account, not credit at a till.
  • The expense is a car repair, a bill or a deductible, where no merchant plan exists.
  • Your credit file rules you out of promotional plans.
  • You want a fixed schedule with a payoff date and monthly credit reporting on every account.

MDG vs Affirm: common questions

Is MDG the same as Affirm?

No. Affirm is point-of-sale financing offered at checkout by partner retailers. MDG is a direct lender that can deposit cash into your checking account and also finances merchandise through its own Shop Now, Pay Later product.

Can Affirm give me cash?

No. Affirm pays the retailer for a purchase. If you need money in your bank account, a cash advance or installment loan is the product that does that.

Which is cheaper?

If you qualify for a 0% promotional plan at a partner retailer, Affirm is cheaper than any interest-bearing loan, including ours. Outside those promotions, compare the total finance charge on both offers rather than the monthly payment.

Does Affirm report to credit bureaus?

It varies by plan. Every MDG account is reported to a national credit bureau monthly, which cuts both ways: on-time payments help, missed ones hurt.

Can I use MDG at any store?

MDG cash goes to your bank account, so it can be spent anywhere. Our Shop Now, Pay Later financing applies to merchandise in our own catalog.
