Find the payment before you pick the amount

Most people decide how much to borrow and then discover the payment. Doing it the other way round leads to fewer missed payments and less interest paid, so this page starts with the payment.

Every figure below is calculated the way your loan agreement calculates it: the payment is rounded to the cent, and the total is that payment multiplied by the number of payments. Nothing is rounded in our favour.

The APR shown for each amount is representative of what that size of loan typically prices at. Your own rate is set by your credit profile, income stability, the term you choose and your state, and is confirmed in writing before you sign.

How to read the table

  • Amounts up to $1,000 are cash advances, repaid over 3 or 6 months.
  • Amounts from $1,000 are installment loans, repaid over 12, 18 or 24 months.
  • A dash means that term is not offered at that amount.
  • $1,000 appears as a cash advance here; it is also available as a 12-month installment loan.

What each amount costs in total

The monthly payment tells you whether you can afford it. The finance charge tells you what it costs. Both matter, and only one of them appears in most adverts.

AmountRepresentative APRLongest termMonthly paymentFinance chargeTotal repaid
$50034.99%6 months$92.04$52.24$552.24
$1,00032.99%6 months$183.07$98.42$1,098.42

$5,00022.99%24 months$261.84$1,284.16$6,284.16

Shorter terms cut these finance charges substantially. A $1,000 cash advance over 6 months costs $98.42 in interest; the same $1,000 as a 24-month installment loan costs $341.84, even though the APR is lower. Term length moves the total more than the rate does.

How much should you actually borrow?

Three questions that are worth more than any calculator.

1

What is the number that fixes the problem?

Borrow that, not the amount you are approved for. Approval limits describe what we will lend, not what you should take.

2

Could you still make this payment in a bad month?

If the answer is no, drop to the next term down the row or the next amount up the table. A payment you can always meet costs less than one you sometimes miss.

3

Is the finance charge worth the problem it solves?

Look at the finance charge column next to what you are fixing. Sometimes it obviously is. Sometimes seeing the number changes the decision, which is the point of showing it.

Take the longer term, then overpay

There is no prepayment penalty on any MDG product, so the safest strategy is to take a term whose payment you could meet in your worst month, then pay extra whenever a good month arrives. You get the safety of the long schedule and most of the savings of the short one.

Common questions

How much is a $1,000 loan per month?

At a representative 32.99% APR over 6 months, a $1,000 MDG cash advance is $183.07 a month. Over a longer installment term the monthly payment falls but the total interest rises. Exact figures for every amount are in the table above.

What is the smallest amount MDG will lend?

$200, as a cash advance repaid over 3 or 6 months.

What is the largest amount MDG will lend?

$5,000, as an installment loan repaid over 12, 18 or 24 months. For anything above $5,000 we are not the right lender.

Does borrowing more get me a lower rate?

Generally yes. Larger loans over longer terms price nearer the bottom of our 18.00% to 35.95% range. That does not make borrowing more cheaper overall, because the finance charge still scales with the amount.

Can I choose any term at any amount?

No. Cash advances of $200 to $1,000 run over 3 or 6 months, and installment loans of $1,000 to $5,000 run over 12, 18 or 24 months. A dash in the table means that combination is not offered.

Are these the rates I will be offered?

They are representative of what each loan size typically prices at, not a quote. Your own APR depends on your credit profile, income stability, term and state, and is confirmed in writing before you sign.
